  NORTH STREET PRIMARY SCHOOL REPORT

Academic Year 2004 - 2005

 

  Registration

 The Academic year 2004 – 2005 began on a positive note.  Two hundred and sixty five (265) students were registered, comprising of One hundred and fifty (150)  boys and One Hundred and fifteen (115) girls.  A total of thirty three (33) students were registered for grade one.

 Staffing

 Mrs. Gloria Henricks who has served the school and community for over thirty (30) years has retired.  Miss Janice Minott has replaced her. Miss Chantell McDonald, Mr. Shyan Evans and Mr. Jesse Yoder have joined the staff.  During the first term Miss Juliet Simms received a severe stoke and was granted emergency long leave.

 

 We bid farewell to  Mr. Yoder who has completed his one year service with us also to Miss Bailey, who has taken up a new position at another institution.

 

Staff Development Activities

The staff went on a one day retreat at Cloysters in St. Ann during the summer holidays.  Members of staff attended several workshops and seminars during the year.

 

Field Trip

 

        In order to help to broaden the horizon of students.  They went on the following trip, to name a few.

Museum – Spanish Town

Hope Zoo

Exposition – Conference Centre

 

Academics

Internal Examination

The Grade One Reading Test was conducted in September, this revealed that about 90% of students mastered the subject area.

 

 The Grade Three Diagnostic Test was implemented.  There was improvement in the area of  Mathematics.

 

Thirty five (35) students sat the Grade Four Library Test.  Twenty five (25) of the students mastered all areas. Ten (10) had to resit the post test in the summer.

 

End of Term Test were administrated during the Christmas, Easter and Summer Term.  Overall the students have shown improvement in most areas.

 

External Examination

 Forty six (46) students sat the Grade Six Achievement Test (G.S.A.T).  Thirteen (13) were placed in Traditional High School.  Results have shown that many students have preformed at and above the National Level.

 

 We will endeavor to continue to work on the weaknesses to improve the performance of our students.

 

School/Church

 School’s church services were conducted though out the three school terms.  Mr. Richard Chambers has demitted office as chairman of the school.  Reverend Dave Spence has been elected new chairman.  On February 2005, we bid farewell to Reverend Dave Spence who is now the new Minister of the Meadowbrook United Church.  We welcome Reverend Nigel Pusey, as the new the Minister for North Street United Church. He conducts Monday Morning Devotion with the school.  

 

 Our Christmas Pageant was held on December  which was in ‘Jamaican Style’. This was a  success.

 

Sports

 Sports Day was held at Up Park Camp.  This was a success.  Students, parents and teachers were awarded medals and certificates. Students participated in the Primary School Champs at the National Stadium.

 

     The school entered the Primary School football Competition in February 2005.  North Street Primary reached the quarter final round for the first time  and as a result two boys received media recognition for scoring 20 goals between themselves.  This outstanding performance made us recipient of a trophy for being the Most Improved School.

 

Festival

Students entered the Festivals of Arts Competition   Eight pieces were submitted. Seven were entered and we were awarded five silver and two bronze for Speech and Drama.

 

Fund Raising Exercise

 Our Jamaica Culturama Day was held in June.  This was a success.  We were featured in both the Gleaner and the Children’s  Own Papers. 

Community

 The school was used as a shelter for a few days during and after Hurricane Ivan.  Minor damage was done. A few salitex  fell from the ceiling upstairs.  During the Local Government Election the school was used as a polling station.  The members of Lodge St John donated Twelve Ceiling Fans to the school.  They were well appreciated as it made the classroom more conducive to learning.  They also donated four drums.  Reverend Dave Spence donated books for the library and class.  While Mrs. Polly Jacas ( Region 1 Educational Officer) donated some science equipments.

 

Repairs

 Repairs were done to the grill.  The door at the tuck shop was replaced.  Repairs were also done to students’ bathrooms.  The Grade one benches were painted.

 

Discipline

 We continue to maintain discipline through out the school.

 

 On behalf of the Principal, Staff and students,  we would like to thank the members of the Church, Parents, Community, Kiwanis Club of Trafalgar, Kiwanis of West St Andrew, Dr. Goeff Palmer and Members of Lodge St. John for their support during the year.  We look forward for your continued support in the coming year.
